Google Ads AI Max Update: Preview AI Ad Copy Before You Opt In, Plus a Direct Offer Test

One of the biggest worries about Google Ads AI Max has been simple: what will Google's AI actually write in my ads? This week Google added a practical answer. Advertisers can now preview sample AI-generated headlines and descriptions before they opt in to text customization. The new section appeared on Google's text customization help page, and Search Engine Land reported it on 8 October 2026.

In the same week, Search Engine Land also spotted a beta Direct Offer asset that can show promotions to shoppers inside Google's AI Mode. So in this post we explain both updates, separate what is available from what is still being tested, and share how we would use them in a real campaign.

What is AI Max text customization?

AI Max for Search is Google's set of AI features for Search campaigns. Text customization, which Google used to call automatically created assets, is one of them. When it is on, Google writes extra headlines and descriptions for your responsive search ads, based on your landing page, existing ads and keywords.

Google says these generated assets only serve when they are predicted to perform better than the ones you wrote, and that they are reviewed and refreshed at least every 48 hours. Google's help page also says that, starting in September 2026, campaigns using text customization are being upgraded to AI Max automatically. So even if you never chose AI Max, it is worth checking your campaign settings.

New: text customization asset previews

According to Google's help page, asset previews show sample text that Google AI would generate for your campaign, so you can check whether it fits your brand and text guidelines before you opt in or launch. Here is how it works:

  • Automatic samples: add a final landing page URL and Google generates up to 10 example headlines and descriptions.

  • No opt-in needed: you can view the examples without turning on text customization.

  • Speed: Google says examples are mostly generated in under 30 seconds.

  • Text guidelines: if you set rules, such as words to exclude or themes to avoid, the previews are filtered to follow them.

  • Where to find it: in the Asset optimization section when creating an AI Max campaign, or when editing an existing campaign.

Google says previews work in all languages supported by text customization and for almost all standard business categories, except adult content. As Search Engine Roundtable notes, this directly answers the concern of not knowing what the AI will write beforehand.

In testing: Direct Offer asset for AI Mode

Search Engine Land reported on 7 October that a beta-labelled Direct offer option is appearing in the Google Ads Assets interface. We could not find an official Google announcement for it, so treat it as a test that may not be in your account yet. Based on that report:

  • Advertisers add an offer name, final URL and short description, and Google AI uses the description to decide when the offer is relevant.

  • You can set the incentive type and value, and optionally upload single-use promo codes by CSV.

  • In AI Mode, an eligible offer can appear under a sponsored result as a "Claim one-time code" option.

  • You can set terms, start and end dates, and daily limits by total value or number of claims.

  • It only serves on campaigns using AI Max or text customization.

Costs and limits

  • No separate fee: neither update mentions an extra charge. You still pay for clicks as usual.

  • Discounts cost money: with Direct Offers, the real cost is the discount you give. Daily claim limits help keep that under control.

  • Samples are not guarantees: Search Engine Land points out that previews are examples, not necessarily the exact headlines Google will serve.

  • Your landing page drives the copy: Google says text customization relies heavily on your website content, so outdated pages can lead to outdated ads.

What this means for advertisers

This section is our view as a digital marketing agency, not Google's claims.

Previews are a small feature with a big practical benefit. Many businesses have avoided AI-generated ad copy because they feared off-brand wording or claims they can't support, such as "lowest price" or "guaranteed results". Now you can see examples first, set exclusions, and decide with real evidence.

For example, a dental clinic in Delhi could preview the AI headlines for its implant treatment page before opting in. If the samples mention offers the clinic doesn't run, that is a sign to fix the landing page and add text guidelines first. The same applies to any service business where accuracy matters.

Direct Offers are worth watching for e-commerce brands. A targeted, single-use code shown at the moment of discovery could convert well. But giving AI control over which incentive appears also needs careful tracking of margins and whether the discount brings truly new sales.

Writing useful text guidelines

Previews are most useful when you pair them with clear text guidelines. Here is what we would include for most service businesses:

  • Claims you can't make, such as "cheapest", "guaranteed" or "number one", unless you can prove them.

  • Offers or services you don't provide, so the AI doesn't promise them.

  • Competitor names and trademarks you don't want in your ads.

  • Your preferred tone, for example friendly and professional, with no slang.

Then run the previews again and check whether the samples now sound like your brand. If Google tells you the guidelines are too restrictive to show any previews, loosen one rule at a time.

Once text customization is live, keep measuring. Google's help page says you can compare ad and campaign metrics using the "Added by" column, which shows which assets Google generated. Check those assets regularly for accuracy, and remove any that drift from your brand or make claims your landing page doesn't support.

Our take: how to use these updates

  1. Check whether any campaigns were automatically upgraded to AI Max, and review their settings.

  2. Before opting in to text customization, run asset previews on your top landing pages.

  3. Fix inaccurate or vague landing page copy first, since Google uses it as source material.

  4. Add text guidelines to exclude words, claims or themes your brand can't use.

  5. If Direct Offers appear in your account, start with a small daily claim limit and measure incremental sales, not just redemptions.
