GPT-6 and Intelligent UI: What OpenAI's ChatGPT Update Means for Your Business
On 7 October 2026, OpenAI started rolling out GPT-6 to everyone who uses ChatGPT, on free and paid plans. The headline feature is Intelligent UI: instead of only writing text, ChatGPT can now answer with charts, tappable buttons, forms and small interactive tools inside the conversation. You can read the details in OpenAI's announcement.
OpenAI says ChatGPT now has more than 1.2 billion weekly users. When the default experience for that many people changes, it affects how your customers research, compare and decide. So in this post we explain what GPT-6 actually changes, who gets which version, what the limits are and what it means for a business with a website to run.
What OpenAI announced on 7 October
OpenAI first introduced GPT-6 models for paid customers in September. This release brings a new GPT-6 model to the everyday Chat tab for everyone. There are three main changes:
Intelligent UI: answers can mix text, visuals and interactive elements, and ChatGPT decides which format fits your question.
Faster answers: ChatGPT can start answering while it is still thinking, then add to the answer as it finds more.
Better web answers: OpenAI says GPT-6 makes better decisions about when to search and finds supporting information more reliably.
One detail is easy to miss. OpenAI says this update applies to the Chat experience only. The models behind ChatGPT Work and Codex are not changing as part of this release.
What is Intelligent UI in GPT-6?
Intelligent UI means ChatGPT can build a small interface around your question. OpenAI's examples include a comparison laid out side by side, an interactive diagram that explains how something works, road trip stops shown on a map, and quick tools like a savings calculator or a bill splitter. When plain text is the most useful answer, it can still just write text.
According to OpenAI, it works through a library of ready-made, streamable components and a compiler that shows the interface as the model writes it, so you don't wait for the whole answer to finish. OpenAI also admits there is "still work ahead" to improve the model's design judgement.
Faster answers, with OpenAI's own numbers
OpenAI says GPT-6 Instant starts answering web-search questions 44% sooner on average than GPT-5.6 Instant. It also says that, in an internal evaluation of everyday agentic tasks, GPT-6 Extra High begins answering as fast as GPT-5.6 Medium while scoring better overall than GPT-5.6 Extra High. These are OpenAI's internal results. They have not been independently tested, and we have not run our own tests.
GPT-6 by ChatGPT plan
The table below is based on OpenAI's 7 October post. Rollout is staged, so an account may not see the change on day one.
ChatGPT plan | Model in the Chat tab | Rollout start |
Plus, Pro, Business | GPT-6 Sol | 7 October 2026 |
Enterprise | GPT-6 Sol | 7 October 2026, depends on admin settings |
Free and Go | GPT-6 Luna | From 8 October 2026 |
ChatGPT Work and Codex | Not changed by this release | Not applicable |
OpenAI describes both GPT-6 Sol and GPT-6 Luna as tuned for everyday conversation. In its system card, OpenAI also says it is treating this October release as High capability in the cybersecurity and biological and chemical areas under its Preparedness Framework, with the matching safeguards in place.
Costs, access and limits
Cost: there is no separate charge for Intelligent UI. Free users get GPT-6 Luna, and paid plans get GPT-6 Sol. OpenAI's pricing page shows plan features, but prices vary by country, so check it in your own region.
Usage limits: according to Notebookcheck's report, citing OpenAI's help pages, Intelligent UI has no separate quota. Your plan's normal limits still apply.
Apps: the same report says older ChatGPT desktop apps for Windows and macOS don't support Intelligent UI, so use the web version or the latest mobile app.
Turning it down: there is a Layout and visuals setting on the web if you prefer plain text, but OpenAI says it doesn't switch ChatGPT to a text-only mode.
Staged rollout: OpenAI says that if you don't see GPT-6 in the model menu, it may not be available for your account yet.
What GPT-6 means for your business
The sections from here on are our view as a web design and digital marketing agency. They are not OpenAI's claims.
Customers will expect answers they can use, not just read
If people get comparison tables, calculators and visual explanations inside ChatGPT, a plain wall of text on a website will feel slow. Think about a local interior studio. A prospect might ask ChatGPT to compare finishes and estimate a budget, then visit your site expecting the same clarity. Pages with clear pricing ranges, simple comparison tables and helpful tools will match that expectation better.
Clear, structured content matters even more
AI assistants build their answers from information they can find and understand. OpenAI says GPT-6 is better at deciding when to search the web and at finding supporting information. That makes it worth keeping your service pages accurate and well structured, with clear headings, prices where you can share them and up-to-date contact details. Good SEO services have always rewarded this, and AI search makes it more important.
Useful for quick internal tools, with care
Teams can now ask ChatGPT for a quick quote calculator, a simple project timeline or a visual comparison for a client meeting. That is useful for drafts and internal planning. But a generated calculator is only as good as the numbers and logic behind it, so check any figures before you share them with a client.
What we don't know yet
OpenAI's post focuses on what people see inside ChatGPT. It does not say how Intelligent UI will choose which websites or sources to show inside those visual answers, or whether businesses will get any control over how their information appears. It is also too early to know how often people will click through to a website once they have a chart or calculator in front of them. We will watch this closely, and we suggest you track referral traffic from ChatGPT in your analytics over the coming months.
Our take: what to do this month
Ask ChatGPT the questions your customers ask about your services, and see how it presents the answer and which sources it uses.
Review your top service pages. Add clear headings, a short summary, comparison tables and FAQs where they genuinely help.
Consider one simple interactive element on your site, such as a price estimator or a booking checklist, if it fits your business.
Set a basic team rule: AI-generated tables, numbers and calculators get checked by a person before anything goes to a client.

Yes. OpenAI says Free and Go users get GPT-6 Luna in the Chat tab, with the rollout starting on 8 October 2026. Paid plans get GPT-6 Sol. Normal plan limits apply.

No. OpenAI says ChatGPT chooses the format on its own based on your question, and it still answers in plain text when that is more useful.
Does GPT-6 change ChatGPT Work or Codex?
Not in this release. OpenAI says the models powering Work and Codex are not changing as part of the 7 October update.
